Shotaro Ishinomori's 009-1 Being Made Into a Live-Action Movie
009-1, a manga written by Shotaro Ishinomori, creator of Kamen Rider and numerous other tokusatsu properties, was set for a live-action film adaptation titled 009-1: The End of the Beginning. Despite the shared numbering, the story has no connection to the Cyborg 009 franchise; it instead follows a female cyborg, Mylene Hoffman, who belongs to the all-female Nine Number Group, a subsidiary of the Zero Zero Organization.
The film was directed by tokusatsu director Koichi Sakamoto and drew on familiar faces from other toku productions. Mylene was portrayed by Mayuko Iwasa, previously known for playing Sonoko Suzuki in the live-action Detective Conan series. The supporting cast included Minehiro Kinomoto (Kamen Rider Accel), Mao Ichimichi (Gokai Yellow), Nao Nagasawa (Hurricane Blue), Shizuka Midorikawa, Naoto Takenaka, Aya Sugimoto, Kazutoshi Yokoyama, Tsukui Minami, and Hirotaro Honda.
Sakamoto promised action-heavy sequences, noting that Mylene’s fighting style would go beyond hand guns to include a signature weapon nicknamed the “Bust Gun.” The film premiered September 7 in Japan, rated R-15.
