Secondary Education: An Independent Tokusatsu Short Film Worth Seeing
Secondary Education is an independent short film described as the tokusatsu equivalent of Video Game High School, built on strong camera work and stretched effectively across a limited budget. It follows a high school chemistry teacher, Eugene Yamamoto, balancing his lessons with a secret double life fighting a roaming monster threat as his Kamen Rider-styled alter ego, the Metacaptain.
In the film, three students land in after-school detention over a failed chemistry test and discover their teacher’s secret when an escaped mutant lobster, seeking revenge for its earlier capture by Yamamoto, shows up in the school hallways; the students apply the same science principles from their failed test to help him defeat it. The project, directed by Jon Truei, was pitched as a hybrid of the 1990s after-school-special format and Japanese tokusatsu conventions.
