I knew I was forgetting something. Here's the trailer for the upcoming Rampage film, based upon the classic 1986 arcade game of the same title, featuring giant monsters whose objective is to survive against military assaults rightfully protecting cities from their wrath and then reduce said cities to smoldering ruin. In the current cinematic climate, where giant monsters are now fairly prominent and viable as "serious" blockbuster fare, how does one adapt what one couldn't be blamed for thinking was a silly take on the kaiju subgenre? Well, you hire a charisma factory like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, of course. Mission accomplished. In this film that reads like a series of sarcastic late night tweets taken more seriously than intended after too much to drink, the former WWE wrestlin...

Marking the atomic lizard's first major 3D animated feature, Planet of the Monsters is the first of a planned trilogy in this format, the results of which we'll be watching with great interest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMQ46PZGByM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u89PG6FiC1g I may never tire of watching Godzilla charge up for a nuclear blast. Those of you looking to get more of that Dynaman goodness from last month are in for a treat. The 1986 classic parody dub of Japan's Kagaku Sentai Dynaman is back with more episodes to stream from original distributors Night Flight. As previously reported, Dynaman, in all its wacky glory, was one of America's first official glimpses into the world of Super Sentai, years before the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers would take households by storm in the 90s. Originally, the niche streaming service Night Flight Plus had only offered three episodes to watch, but now they've doubled that digit for more color-coded explosions to sate your appetite for tokusatsu's early English-language oddities. Whether one chooses to watch them with an earnest appeal, as an anthropological look at the special e...

Power Rangers HyperForce is back with another episode of tabletop role-playing, presented by HyperRPG and Twitch. Not to be outdone by episode two's Halloween adventure, the Time Force recruits aren't done tangling with well-known monsters. In this installment, they ask: Whatever happened to Scorpina? The gold-encrusted supervillainess plagued the nightmares of the Teenagers With Attitude in the early 90s on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, almost taking them out for good on some occasions, but then she just kinda... stopped showing up. As we ponder that question and more, the answers may await in the third episode of this new series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SKteabmi5M Power Rangers HyperForce streams live every Tuesday at 9PM PT from HyperRPG.   You might also like...

Celebrating the 45th anniversary of the Mazinger saga, and the 50th anniversary of creator Nagai Go's contributions as a manga artist, the film offers more super robot action to dazzle any newcomer, peppered with some familiar touchstones for those who know what to look out for. Along with the new trailer's dynamic visuals and sonic assault blasting us with the fantastical whimsy of the story on display, we get a sample of "The Last Letter". It's been two weeks since our last visit with the motley crew of heroes, rivals, and frenemies of Kamen Rider Build, and they've chosen quite the cliffhanger to leave us dangling from. With the Touto science lab about to be invaded by the terrorist organization known as Faust, loyalties on every possible side are being tested at each corner, tensions are high, and the show has geared up for its most thrilling episode yet. How do they keep outdoing themselves like this? We begin with a rare recap that doesn't include a pseudo-fourth-wall-breaker of the main characters sarcastically commenting on their own show as usual, instead preferring to just roll the clips in as dramatic a fashion as they can muster, slowly building us toward the coming siege. After the opening credits (with a s...

Fan films are tricksy. Especially those based upon anime properties, which themselves come with a style and a vibe that seems near impossible to replicate without sacrificing something that makes the original great. And yet, those of us who love these titles, who have the passion to express that adoration creatively, keep persisting. With this in mind, we dive into Dragon Ball Z: Light of Hope, the new fan film release that dropped this week to a crowd of eager viewers. Based upon the wildly popular Dragonball franchise, its genesis in the manga series from famed creator Akira Toriyama, which then went on to become one of the most widely-known Japanese animated titles in the medium's history, with several sequels and countless films and specials. Light of Hope takes is cues from The H...

It was a fierce campaign, but TV Asahi's Godzilla General Election was a roaring success, in which the most fearsome beasts in all the land stomped the competition and soared to the top, a trail of kaiju bodies roasting in atomic fire behind them. For those unaware, the first terrestrial broadcast of 2016's monster flick Shin Godzilla debuted on Japanese television just days ago, and in celebration of this momentous occasion, the Godzilla General Election was held.
