2017’s Best Power Rangers Episode Is a Voltron Episode

Voltron: Legendary Defender is back at it, with another burst of hilarity and excitement in the show's fourth season on Netflix. And, as we hunkered down to catch up with the heroic, space-faring Paladins of Voltron and their robotic lions, we were treated to a special episode that some of us in the tokusatsu fandom couldn't help but find a bit familiar. While there are plenty easy comparisons to be made between them and the multi-colored Teenagers With Attitude of the live-action Power Rangers franchise (and their Super Sentai cousins from across the pond), none would be so bold as with this season's striking fourth episode, "The Voltron Show". We're not just throwing shade, folks. We're launching it out of a circus cannon to the tune of a full-scale marching band. And the result, true ...

‘Kamen Rider W: Fuuto Detectives’ Knows Which Way The Wind Blows

In the summer of 2010, tokusatsu fans said goodbye to the lovable heroes of the Narumi Detective Agency, and the many wacky denizens of Fuuto City, when Kamen Rider W came to an end. Of course, several appearances occurred after that, but the loss of this pulpy action-noir world in regular doses was perhaps felt more strongly for some than with most other titles in the Kamen Rider pantheon. While the tradition of a new Kamen Rider taking up the spotlight from the old with each passing year continued to be observed, introducing us to many wondrous new facets of this crazy franchise, there was always a special place in my heart for the two-in-one detectives, Shotaro and Phillip, and their quest to rid the city of dangerous contraband known as Gaia Memories. It's with this thought in min...

Full-Blown Fullmetal Alchemist Goes Fully Live-Action, In Full Trailer

Fullmetal Alchemist, the story that refuses to die, will not stop until it's inhabited every entertainment medium known to man, twice. Inspired by the original manga from Arakawa Hiromu, the journey of two brothers in a fantastical world has been chronicled multiple times in animated form, to rapturous praise by many, and critical side-eyes by a few. We imagine the same will be the case when their latest incarnation, in the form of this new live-action film, comes to the big screen this December. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NRt4keIZZk I haven't seen more than a few episodes of the anime years ago (shut up, I know) but, at the very least, the film looks visually striking. The effects work is far beyond what I'd expected to see, and the scenery and costumes are all lovely. Apparentl...

Green Ranger Michael Taber Opens Up About Controversial Tweet

At this year's recent Sac-Anime convention, actor Michael Taber elaborated on a story that began in early August, when a message was posted to Twitter concerning his time as part of the cast of Power Rangers Dino Charge. The 2015 incarnation of the popular Power Rangers franchise saw a new group of young adults brought from the US to film in bucolic New Zealand - a dream come true, many aspiring actors might tell you. But, according to Taber's unexpected social media outburst, the scenery was not always reflective of the experience. Far from the first time an actor from the long-running action/adventure series has expressed discontent after the lights came down, the Power Rangers brand has experienced minor controversies since its early stages. Talent leaving the project under uncerta...

Kamen Rider Ryuki’s Matsuda Satoshi Announces Birth of First Child

In 2002, actor Matsuda Satoshi played the tough, brooding warrior Kamen Rider Knight, filling the children of Japan with wonder at his exploits with super-powered friends and foes on Kamen Rider Ryuki. This month, he announced that a child of his own has arrived. Matsuda, who played the prickly, black-clad Akiyama Ren (as well as the voice of his American counterpart in Kamen Rider Dragon Knight), had these thoughts to share on the momentous occasion. I have, Become a Father(* ̄▽ ̄) For me who had grown in a family where "My father was no longer there for my Birthday of One Year Old", this is the most distant feeling that "I will become a Father". Should I say it is because of the Stork (Kounotori) Um? Kouno, Dori?? (It doesn't matter which ever it is!). This small life whi...

Fists are flying in this episode of Kamen Rider Build. After a slightly weaker entry for the previous week, we come back as strong as ever with another fantastic installment in this series that continues to rock my socks. Build, where have you been all my life? Returning us to where we left off, Episode 6 begins with Ryuuga continuing to follow Tatsuya, whom he had deliberately re-infected with Smash essence, turning him back into a brainwashed monster. And wouldn't you know it, we've found the bad guys' lair in the sixth freaking episode of this series, continuing Build's trend of taking the rule book and torching it on a pyre of flaming tropes and modern cliches. Good riddance! After Ryuuga finds himself surrounded, Build comes through with a surprising rescue. Despite getting kn...

Game of Thrones: The Anime – Winter is Animated

The war for the Iron Throne just got a little more epic, with this fun opening credits sequence from French Youtuber Malec. Inspired by the wildly popular fantasy drama series Game of Thrones, this interprets the battle to save Westeros, and the many dramatic turns it takes, in a fashion only Japanese animation can deliver. Or at least something like it. Check out the fan-made opening credits sequence here, but newcomers be warned. There be spoilers in these waters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efD3nmwF-IM I love that the music, while evoking the typical sound of classic anime openers, also adopts the style of the actual Game of Thrones theme, one of the most iconic of its kind. Interspersing Japanese lyrics with seemingly random English adds the perfect touch. Particularly the phra...

‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Trailer – Embracing Destiny

The Star Wars saga continues with the latest trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, second in the new Skywalker trilogy, returning us to a galaxy far, far away at a time of great unrest. Director Rian Johnson steps up to the plate to bring us another taste of the visual feast coming this December. And when the last trailer ends with a grizzled Luke claiming that the famed heroes known as the Jedi must end, it has a lot to live up to. Not only does The Last Jedi have the responsibility of carrying on the torch passed on from The Force Awakens, JJ Abrams' first chapter in the trilogy, it must expand upon the characters and their universe in fresh, interesting ways. And it must handle with grace and care what we suspect is the final full performance of Carrie Fisher (General Leia Organa),...
