Well, here we are for another Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger review. And while I'm still very much enjoying this spacey super-team series, I have to be honest and say that I'm a little disappointed with one key factor. You guessed it, kids. It starts with "luck" and ends with "eeee" . The sad thing is that I'm actually not someone who dislikes Lucky, our strange and often shouty de facto leader of this band of galactic liberators. When others complained that he was too in-your-face, I shrugged indifferently, having enjoyed his part in this wacky ensemble of futuristic alien saviors bent on defeating the oppressive Jark Matter organization. Of course, this was back when the show was just getting started, and the new car smell had yet to wear off. Every sight and sound was fresh, and there was ...

Earth of the future has become a smoldering den of kaiju in Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, the new animated feature from Polygon Pictures and creature-feature titan Toho. In this 3D animated tale, a group of space travelers whose family had once abandoned the ravaged Earth now return to the place humanity once called home, for one last battle against the horde of monsters that now rule in their stead. Let's check out the trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYwAbBI0r5o That beam tho. Planet of the Monsters comes to us three years after Legendary Pictures released their own Godzilla, and one year after Toho's Shin Godzilla woke the fire-breathing beast from cinematic hibernation on its native shores of Japan. It proves an unexpected follow-up to the live-action effort from Att...

2017 has been a banner year for the Power Rangers brand. With a line of successful comics from Boom! Studios, a new web-based RPG series debuting this week, the television branch still trucking after all these years, and a whole slew of merchandise waiting to be scooped up by Ranger fans young and old, the franchise would appear to be firing on all cylinders. Unless, of course, you have a glance at Saban's Power Rangers, the Lionsgate film that released in theaters earlier this year to mixed reactions. While many of us loved the Rangers' latest cinematic offering, there may be some who see this particular branch of the franchise as one that can be cut off at the base. Trademarkia lists the logo for Saban's Power Rangers as abandoned by original owners SCG Power Rangers LLC. Which woul...

This has to be some kind of record. Looking back, I can't recall a single Kamen Rider series that opened so strongly, with such consistent quality across the board, for a period as long as eight straight weeks. There may be some shows that started amazing but petered off a bit, others that steadily arc up from a slower opening, and more still that just kinda ride a wave of generally okay episodes back-to-back-to-back. None in memory can boast what Build can, not once suffering a major dip in quality in such a timeframe. It's still early in the show's run, but that's worth celebrating. Kamen Rider Build is not messing around. Last we saw, the gruesome twosome Ryuuga and Sento were hot on the trail of a lead that could potentially solve the murder of the man their lives have been ine...

In 1983, a group of five heroic inventors united against the evil Jashinka Empire in Kagaku Sentai Dynaman. Three years later, their harrowing adventures were broadcast for American audiences as part of the USA network's Night Flight block. Simply titled Dynaman, this was a parody series capitalizing on the apparent B-movie aesthetic and playing up the silliest aspects of the show. A precursor to 1993's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, this was among the first times Super Sentai would be viewed by American masses, albeit in an altered form. My, how things have changed. But if you want a taste of what it was like for potential tokusatsu fans back in the day, Dynaman is now available to watch online. Courtesy of Night Flight Plus, the Dynaman dub is viewable now, with three episodes. Curio...

The miraculous rebirth of the Pacific Rim franchise, after a less-than-stellar box office for Guillermo Del Toro's original monster mash left fans in a period of doubt, now revives the speculation about what might happen if the city-stomping Kaiju and their mechanized Jaeger nemeses would ever meet up with the denizens of Legendary Pictures' new MonsterVerse. Namely the atomic lizard Godzilla and his furry frenemy of Kong: Skull Island fame. Well, now, we may finally have an answer to those oft-posed questions. Sort of. The second in what is hoped to be an ongoing series, Pacific Rim: Uprising returns us to the world saved by the pilots of giant robot Gipsy Danger, now focusing on new lead John Boyega, who commands the newly redesigned Gipsy Avenger for more creature carnage. Colli...

New posters for this winter's Kamen Rider mega-crossover event, Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FINAL: Build & Ex-Aid with Legend Riders, have surfaced, and we've got our microscopes handy for some good old-fashioned speculation about what these images could mean for the landmark film. As the headlining Kamen Rider Build takes center stage as the final Rider series of this decades-long franchise to air during Japan's Heisei Era, this can be seen as the closing chapter of an epic saga. At least until next year, where we inevitably start all over again. First, the beautious new posters for the film, featuring the star-studded cast of superheroic figures of past and present, among which are a few actors that many Rider fans never believed they'd see again. Oh yes. From left to r...

In Mobile Suit Gundam, Pacific Rim, and Super Sentai, giant robots wreak havoc across burning landscapes under flashes of lightning and the roar of mechanized battlecries passionately echoing across their battlefields. The concept of such a thing happening in reality seems farfetched and fraught with so many potential problems that it makes the pursuit of such a future seem like it may not really be worth the effort. Enter MegaBots Inc., who puts forth the effort so we don't have to, to results that, if nothing else, are certainly interesting. In 2015, the tech company issued a challenge to Japan's Suidobashi Heavy Industry to do battle, pitting the giant robots representing each group against each other. Despite the fact that this is clearly insane, they agreed, and so the fight was ...
