Can we talk about the new Kamen Rider Build? I have to talk about this. I need to be reassured that I'm seeing what I'm seeing and that it's not going to be taken away from me when they finally realize what they've done and decide it's all a really expensive mistake. This is too much of what I wanted all at once. Who's about to get fired for this magnificence?! The brilliance begins at minute one, with the greatest recap ever committed to film. The braggadocious smarty-pants Kiryuu Sento and his new fugitive pal Banjou Ryuuga have dueling summaries, bantering even as they tell us what happened in last week's premiere episode. I already love these idiots and it's only been like twenty minutes. Please tell me I can keep them, mommy! After the recap, we get our first look at the openi...

Papa's family nickname in the Kagoshima dialect was Ikunchan.  They called him by it, and he went to meet them. Papa was mischevious, full of himself, clumsy. The last time he spoke when he was awake, he said, "Maybe, maybe it's too late, but I don't want to leave you and Masami.  Masami is my greatest achievement.  Please, please, please.  Do you understand?  Please."  Over and over. "Make sure you live a long time," he had said to me recently.  He sounded so weak and frail then, I couldn't refuse. (more…)

Shigeru Araki, Kamen Rider Stronger, passed away. The last time we met was when he invited me to be a guest at his concert. We hadn't seen each other in about 2 years then. We took this picture when he stopped by my hotel a couple of years ago. In the Toei show Chojin Bibyun he played Bibyun while I played Dr. Daima.  We worked each other for half a year.  My son was in elementary school at that time, Araki was quite kind to him. 6 or 7 years ago he was a guest in one of my theater troupe's productions.  I had just been thinking lately that I wanted to seem him perform, and had called him on the phone. He was 63 years old.  May he rest in peace. Translated from the original entry.

Heaven called Stronger. He was 63 years old... born in 1943, he was the same age as me. I wonder what Stronger was thinking about when he moved on.  Did he have regrets? Were there things he wished he'd done? Did he think, "It's my time, I've done all I wanted"? We didn't really speak all that deeply, so I don't know.  It was last year, or maybe the year before, that I saw him at the Rider event that Okada from Oono Kenyuukai arranged. (more…)
