(Kyoryu) Brave New World Tokusatsu hero shows, and the worldwide fandom surrounding them, have changed greatly over the past fifteen years. Beyond genre, beyond formula, beyond character archetypes, beyond even cinematography and direction, the greatest way that change has manifested is cross-pollination. Super Sentai—in its original, unedited form—currently gets official DVD releases in the West. GARO went from a pet project known only to the hardcore, to a running franchise and a mainstay event for one of the biggest MMOs in the world. Kamen Rider has radically reinvented itself several times tonally, and Ultraman is finally getting significant amounts of love by way of behemoth streaming service Crunchyroll.  Meanwhile, more and more properties are adopting the "live-action...

A month after Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger's first round of toys released, we now get the final missing piece to the wave 1 merchandise: Good Striker. DX Good Striker is a big and bulky mecha with 2 "modes" and 4 various functions. The first mode is his Dial Fighter form, where he more closely resembles one of the Lupinranger's mecha and, through some very simple and not-so-creative motions, he can assume his Trigger Machine form to more closely resemble the Patranger's mecha. Honestly, I think most people would agree Good Striker was really only meant to be an aerial vehicle. It's the mode he looks the best in and his car mode is a stretch at best, though I do admit the slight changes do make him fit in better with the respective teams. Good Striker also ...

Welcome back to Super Hero Synopses, where we maintain records of all activities related to Japanese superheroes. This week is filled with investigations, as Sento tries to determine the secrets of Misora's bangle, and the Global Police are trying to crack a string of missing person cases. Which do you prefer - the lighthearted hijinks of Kaito Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger, or the tragedy and tension of Kamen Rider Build? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below or anywhere else in the unlimited world of HJU. Kamen Rider Build, Episode 25 “An Idol Awakens” Following on from last week's battle, Misora appears with her bracelet and eyes aglow. She raises her arm and summons a strong wind. What do Kamen Rider Drive, Spyro The Dragon, Super Mario Bros, and Buzz Lightyear of Toy Story all have in common? They each have their own line of video game gimmick figures. Let's rewind it back to December 2014. Bandai Namco had just pumped out another game for their live-action Kamen Rider franchise on TV in Japan, this one with a slight twist. Bandai Namco wanted to hop in on the gimmick figure market much like like its competitors at Skylanders, Amiibo, and Disney Infinity, so they made Kamen Rider Summonride. Unfortunately, due to poor game design, bad controls, and the fact that the figures are extremely lackluster, Summonride fell flat. It's time to pick up that Dualshock 3, and watch as our Friends of Justice at Fighting Frogs Ultra attempt to get down and dirty with some ...

Here's a little something to jam to while waiting for your next fix when it comes to the heroes of the tokusatsu world. From Kamen Rider to Super Sentai to Power Rangers, Youtuber Studio Megaane has been delivering one nostalgic twist after another on the special-effects shows we at Henshin Justice Unlimited hold most dear. Plus quite a few other titles both of the live-action and animated variety. Studio Megaane creates music tracks in the style of old school 8-bit video games, generating a unique sound not to be duplicated, especially for those of us who fondly remember the days when this was pretty much all you had when mashing buttons and cursing the incredibly difficult games of the era. You haven't known true struggle until you've been felled by your hundredth accidental landing...

Welcome back to Super Hero Synopses, your weekly record of the paths our heroes must walk upon in a bid to become new legends. This week we're mostly transcribing painful memories as Kamen Rider Build explores the trials Gentoku underwent in order to become Kamen Rider Rogue, and Kaito Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger digs down to uncover the motivation driving our newest blue ranger to a life of crime. But it isn't all flashbacks of miserable experiences, as the mysteries behind Misora and Kogure deepen further. As always, please feel free to leave your comments in the section below or anywhere else in the world of HJU. We'd love to know how you think these shows are stacking up, not just against each other but within their own franchises too. Also, please keep an eye ...

I so want to make a Kamen Rider Hibiki joke right now, but nothing comes to mind. Alas. Suda Masaki's star has risen considerably since his stint as the quirky second part of the half-and-half super-detective in 2009's Kamen Rider W. Leaping from one prestigious role in television and film to another, he's grown more popular than his talent agency deems appropriate for him to return to cameo in the Kamen Rider franchise that many of us know him best from. But as he continues to further branch out in the entertainment world, he gears up to release his new album, including some previously-released tracks as well as new pieces exclusively for this debut album. Here's Suda singing "Scenery I've Never Seen Before" for a commercial celebrating Japanese national soccer. https://youtu....

Promises, promises. It's all determined salutes and solemn vows on this episode of Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger. And as we settle into this "cops and robbers" series, it hits me just how much the franchise has begun to change its tune. I think we were onto something when we speculated that, in its own way, the Super Sentai brand has been slowly creeping back to the forward-thinking Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters flavor in the last few years. I recently described the 2012 series as being ahead of its time, with its slick style, its character-centric stories, and a seeming intent to move the show into a new era. They just moved at such a fast clip that some diehards felt left in the dust with the whiplash it gave the fan community. And so, after a couple series that...
