Wedding bells are ringing for the dump truck-driving psychic superhero Nakamura Chise, as the actress announces this week that she has tied the knot. Nakamura starred as Natsuki aka BoukenYellow from the 2006 tokusatsu series GoGo Sentai Boukenger, where her quirky character stumbled into rescuing her teammates through many a strange and daunting adventure. Now, Nakamura embarks on her own kind of real-life adventure with her new beau, a non-industry man. Word of the happy couple's recent nuptials came from Nakamura's personal blog, and the date they signed for the official family register has special significance. She and her husband-to-be originally found each other on a poker game app, and later met in person. Their January 1 registry date serves as a bit of an in-joke representing...

Welcome to the second installment of a brand new series here on HJU, Scholars Talking Toku. My name is Justin Mullis. I’m a scholar working in the academic field of religious studies with a life long love of Japanese pop-culture. Earlier this year an essay I wrote, “Notes from the Land of Light: Observations on Religious Elements Seen in Ultraman” was published in the book Giant Creatures in Our World: Essays on Kaiju and American Popular Culture (2017, McFarland Press) edited by Camille D.G. Mustachio and Jason Barr. I recommend you pick it up! As a result of my work on this essay I came to realize that there were a number of scholars, like me, who were interested in the topic of Japanese superheroes, through separated both geographically and by areas of expertise. The goal of ...

When I started working on this essay I believed that I was breaking new ground, that work by academics on Japanese superheroes was probably minuscule to nonexistent. What I soon realized however was that a number of scholars were in fact interested in this...

The next cast in line to join the swelling ranks of the Super Sentai franchise makes up not one super-team, but two. Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patoranger makes history by pitting two equally important groups of superpowered heroes against each other in a co-headlining battle royale. The first official poster is here, and with it comes a brief synopsis of the coming events. Right off the bat, the logo containing the names of both teams looks like that of a "versus movie", as previously mentioned. Observed separately, the two halves don't even look like they belong to the same series. A simple, but effective way to illustrate the differences between the two groups, despite some of their implied similarities. One such similarity can be noted quite easily, with a gla...

Update: A new image has revealed the suits and weapons of the teams, found at the end of our original post below. It's a new day for fans of the long-running Super Sentai franchise, as word trickles slowly down the superpowered pike that those lovable, multi-colored hero teams are getting a makeover for their 42nd entry into the television saga. I thought the star-spanning quest of 2017's Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger was an interesting departure, with its enormous team of twelve protagonists fighting to save a future universe from an oppressive empire, but it seems Toei Company and TV Asahi are doubling down on that idea and giving us a story with not one, but two teams in a single series. Not only that, but these teams are being set against each other as enemies and rivals. The official ti...
