Senkosha Productions is celebrating sixty years of justice with the anniversaries of some of the tokusatsu subgenre's pioneering superstars, who paved the way for the many heroic stories to follow decades after their inception. Among them are the classic superhero shows Moonlight Mask and Planet Prince, as well as the mecha series Super Robot Red Baron. 1958's black-and-white Moonlight Mask series was hailed as one of Japan's first live-action television superheroes. His identity never truly revealed (though heavily implied with the constant disappearing acts played by lead character Iwai Juro, conveniently absent when the title hero shows up to save the day), his adventures took him across 130 episodes and 6 movies. Within this massive tome of stories was TV's first famed kaiju, the ...

In 1979, four years after the last live-action Ultraman series had left the airwaves, Tsuburaya Productions decided to take their giant hero franchise into a new arena with The☆Ultraman, the first animated entry into the beloved Ultra Series. Now, for the first time, US audiences will be able to catch the show on television, thanks to the fine folks at TOKU. Continuing to kick giant monster ass, after airing such titles as Ultraman Leo and Gridman: The Hyper Agent in recent months, the TOKU channel has made itself a destination for fun, nostalgic film and television offerings in the imaginative tokusatsu subgenre. The☆Ultraman represents the next step on their apparent quest to get everything the kaiju kings at Tsuburaya have ever produced on American TV. This news comes to us ...

Wedding bells are ringing for the dump truck-driving psychic superhero Nakamura Chise, as the actress announces this week that she has tied the knot. Nakamura starred as Natsuki aka BoukenYellow from the 2006 tokusatsu series GoGo Sentai Boukenger, where her quirky character stumbled into rescuing her teammates through many a strange and daunting adventure. Now, Nakamura embarks on her own kind of real-life adventure with her new beau, a non-industry man. Word of the happy couple's recent nuptials came from Nakamura's personal blog, and the date they signed for the official family register has special significance. She and her husband-to-be originally found each other on a poker game app, and later met in person. Their January 1 registry date serves as a bit of an in-joke representing...

Ultraman Geed, the 29th incarnation of the long-running Ultra Series, has ended. And as we await Tsuburaya Productions' next entry into the ongoing kaiju-fighting super-franchise, we thought it might be fun to take a look back on the 2017 story with a handy collection. We've amassed quite a lot of pictures from the giant hero series, after spending the last several months posting reviews, slowly recapping much of Team Geed's adventures as they fought to protect their world from otherworldly threats. Here's a sampling of the images we've been holding onto, most of which were never included in our many previous Ultraman Geed posts. In the gulf between the start of this new year and the eventual announcement of the new series which will ultimately succeed Geed, we have the upcoming G...

Take flight with this new Inuyashiki teaser trailer. The upcoming film adapts the popular manga series, in which the title character, an aging salaryman with a dreadfully ordinary life, suddenly becomes extraordinary when a fateful explosion changes everything. But along for the ride is another who has been gifted with the same strange abilities Inuyashiki now possesses. And this guy doesn't share his wholesome philosophy about what to do with the considerable power they now wield. Shenanigans, as they inevitably must, will ensue. Despite the fact that our unlikely lead hero gleefully sings the Astro Boy theme song when he first discovers his gifts, this story may not be quite as bright and happy as it sounds. Writer/illustrator Oku Hiroya's original comic, recently given the anime tr...
