It's been a wonderful season for tokusatsu. From the colorful, high-flying adventure of Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger to the intense, take-no-prisoners action of Kamen Rider Build, the world of special effects television has rarely been so exciting. And, as we inch closer to the tearful farewell to the spacey super-team of Kyuranger and ramp up toward the introduction of their successors in the upcoming Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger vs Keisatsu Sentai Patranger, here's a small picture gallery to celebrate the era of these Toei Company heroes. This brief sampling comes courtesy of HeroVision, the tokusatsu-themed publication featuring high-quality images of the stars and assorted memorabilia from their fantastical series, as well as original interviews and commentary from the people who bring the...

Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters is stomping its way into the print medium with a new comic based on this, the first official animated feature for the long-running Godzilla franchise. The giant lizard's story will be told in manga form based on the character designs from the film, with new material only found in this version of the tale. Published in Shonen Jump this March and illustrated by Youth Kurahashi. Meanwhile, the kaiju anime trilogy continues its rampage as the second of the three gets its title. What a marvelous year it will be for monsters. Natalie brings us the news for the manga, which will feature added backstory for the film's cast of characters, as we await the arrival of the next post-apocalyptic kaiju throwdown just months later. And the name of that throwdown, t...

Ah, hell. Every Tom, Dick, and Harry decided to drop trailers for their mega-blockbuster these past two weeks. Must be another Star Wars December. This time, it's Ernest Cline's heavyweight pop culture champion Ready Player One, the bestselling book given life via the man who helped generate a large part of the very fan fervor his sci-fi adventure sought to invoke - famed director Steven Spielberg. And with this second extended look at the film, we have a ton of new iconic characters, images, and music cues to add to the growing pile that has nerds of all ages adjusting in their seats. Among these totemic titans is the anime super-robot tearing up the skies in a battle for the Oasis. No, it's not Voltron, like so many have misidentified him as. And no, it's not the Iron Giant, though he ...

The Power Rangers brand is having something of a silent renaissance of late. While the television series has gone on for years, almost invisible to most adults yet never off the airwaves with new episodes for more than a single year since the franchise's start in the early 90s, the Rangers have branched out considerably to other entertainment mediums, often with strong results. The Teenagers With Attitude, and the many young adults that launched from their footsteps in the years after Angel Grove was a mere glimmer in their visors' display panel, dominated the attention of many curious watchers this year, whether it be on our phones with games like Power Rangers Legacy Wars, or on the big screen with the franchise's first feature-length movie in decades. There's also Power Rangers Hyp...

If you're anything like me, then your love of Kamen Rider Build and its slowly expanding universe has steadily grown in the past few weeks since it first hit the airwaves. For those that are, and those who have yet to know its greatness, there is the Kamen Rider Build Character Book, featuring high-quality photos of the show's lead cast. Heroes, villains, and whatever Utsumi's supposed to be, all gathered for this book. Let's have a glance.   For those unaware, Character Books focus entirely on the actors in civilian costume, and thus rarely feature any actual Kamen Rider suits or fantasy props like those typically found in the more traditional TV-kun or Toei Hero MAX. So, no toys in sight here. It's all about the people. Showcasing the stars in various photos as well as s...

The Best Power Rangers Series Isn’t On TV

2017 has truly been the Year of the Ranger, hasn't it? Not only did we get our first theatrically-released feature film in years, and a plethora of new and exciting merchandise, but the television series is still trucking along, in its 24th season. To say that it's been a banner year for parent company Saban Brands may be a bit of an understatement. Which is why the less-than-stellar reception to the current TV incarnation feels like such bad timing. While there's a big-budget movie playing, and all eyes are back on the Power Rangers franchise after lingering in relative obscurity, year after year, casual fans having assumed the show was cancelled ages ago, people were suddenly turning their attention back toward our friendly heroes in multi-colored spandex. And then they seeā€¦ that. ...
