With the clink of champagne glasses, we begin our newest entry into the long-running Super Sentai franchise. And as the 42nd incarnation of this ongoing saga, Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger has a lot to live up to. After achieving some success by mixing up their well-worn formula with the previous series, chief among my hopes for their latest endeavor was that they'd continue to reevaluate and reinvent their style, which sometimes felt a bit old hat. It's fitting then that we kick off the new story in a casino, as Lupinranger VS Patranger is in a gambling mood this premiere week. Let's zipline into the first action-packed episode and see if it paid off. We open with an exquisitely over-the-top shyster taking money from a desperate man who seems not to notice th...

Wow. I'm fresh out of new adjectives to describe this spectacular series with. Kamen Rider Build is playing for keeps, holding us all firmly in the palm of its hand and refusing to let go. There's never been a Kamen Rider series so ruthlessly determined to tell a story with depth and character at the forefront while still maintaining such an exciting overall feel that keeps you coming back week after week. How much more in awe can one reviewer be? Let's find out as we dive into the supreme episode 22. Previously, Kiryuu Sento said hello to the bottom of his emotional barrel, having caused the death of an enemy combatant with the berserker powers of the Hazard Trigger, a devastating turn of events for one as righteous as he, taking on the guilt of every perceived misstep and folly. Ove...

You know, I'm sure they exist, but I can't fathom how any fan of the Kamen Rider franchise can watch this series from the beginning up till now and not be swept in by it. Kamen Rider Build is the most consistently excellent series in the franchise in many moons. And, though we predicted how certain events like those found in this gripping episode would play out, even we could not have expected it to strike us like this. It hits like a ton of bricks, then picks up the bricks in a large sack, ready to swing them all back at you a few more times. In this challenging installment, young genius Kiryuu Sento proves hazardous to his enemy's health, and to himself, as he takes an impossible situation in the superpowered war between feuding territories and somehow makes it worse. Who he turns to i...

KAMEN RIDER BUILD Episode 20 Pulls the Trigger on one of its Best Yet

Well, that settles it. Kamen Rider Build is easily one of the best in the franchise. With twenty episodes of this exciting series in the can and not a single rotten apple in the bunch, there seems to be no stopping Team Build and their exceptionally well-told adventures protecting their home of Touto from enemies without and within. In this installment, one character falls from grace, another rises to the occasion, and the simplest answer turns out to be the right one, in one of the smartest, most consistently thrilling shows in the decades-long Kamen Rider saga. It's almost criminal how easy they make it look, and we're counting our blessings that the confidence on display in the first third of this story translates to the rest. We should be so lucky. Time flies when your eyes are gl...

KAMEN RIDER BUILD is Next Level in the Hazardous Episode 19

Kamen Rider Build is the television series we need but don't deserve. And as we dive further into this exemplary action show, it's got me wondering if one character will die a hero or live long enough to see himself become the villain. This is episode 19. Another week, another twist to add to the ever-mounting pile as the story rolls on. Our last episode was all about #FAMILY, and we were left with Psycho Prime Minister Himuro Gentoku as he came face-to-face with Utsumi, his former secretary whom he had personally shot, suddenly revealing that he is very much alive. After Utsumi briefly butts into the recap narration from poor lead hero Sento (whose dialogue is getting less peppy by the second with all this war business), Gentoku's old buddy simply pushes up his glasses and smiles at ...

The battle to save Touto from the fires of war continue on Kamen Rider Build, as genius amnesiac Kiryuu Sento finds he's not the only bug-eyed super-dude without memories running around these days. Last time, Kamen Rider Kiva's Takeda Touhei debuted as the new mystery soldier from neighboring territory Hokuto, leading the charge (in his own lethargic, unmotivated way) into Touto to retrieve the Martian Pandora Box, and the Full Bottles needed to access its immense, unknowable power. Now, he and his three dopey subordinates are ready to butt heads with Sento and Ryuuga to prove their mettle. But first, another recap, as narrated by Sento, though this time we find our sarcastic hero in a surprisingly low-key mood. Recent events have taken the wind out of his sails, but a sudden intrusio...

It's funny. I started out reviewing Kamen Rider Build under the assumption that, at some point, it would be less necessary to discuss each episode of the series on an individual basis. Like with most entries into the Kamen Rider franchise (to say nothing of its counterparts in Super Sentai), I expected that we'd eventually reach a point where installments would feel less substantial and thus, waiting a while between reviews would make perfect sense. Nope! Kamen Rider Build has consistently flipped the script on our expectations, bringing new and exciting twists on its narrative week after week, leaving very little room for its fans to lose interest as we barrel through toward the finish line. Before the show's brief hiatus, we were left on a cliffhanger that spelled potential doom for...

Well, that was fast. After the high drama of our last episode in this amazing series, I incorrectly assumed it would take us a moment to regroup before leaping straight back into the business with Acting Prime Minister Himuro Gentoku and his twisted bid for power, after being exposed for the treasonous conspirator that he is. I should have known by now: Kamen Rider Build laughs in the face of such flimsy expectations. Your timeline is too slow for them. They know what they want to do and there's no time like the present to execute. Episode 16 begins exactly where episode 15 ended, with Gentoku being hauled off for his considerable crimes against his own Touto government, until our genius amnesiac hero Kiryuu Sento stops him to ask why the former minister was taunting him in their prio...

ULTRAMAN GEED Ends as it Began: Confusingly

So, here we are at the finale of the Ultraman Geed television series. And while there's so much to have loved about this story of the son of a corrupt titan taking his place among vaunted heroes, I can say that my feelings about the show's end, in many ways, mirror the same complicated thoughts evoked by its first few episodes. In recent weeks, the villainous Ultraman Belial returned with a vengeance, revealing himself to have been secretly watching his follower, Fukuide Kei, long since his supposed demise at the hands of Ultraman Geed. Kei took the news pretty well, considering the absolute torture his master put him through, giving him no sympathy and pretty much telling him straight to his face how little he means to him. Kei is a villain of a special breed. It's rare to have such ...

Who needs breaks? Not Kamen Rider Build, that's for sure! Since the newest addition to the Kamen Rider television legacy burst onto the scene, they've barreled forward full steam ahead, running right over every narrative pot hole that could have slowed it down along the way, redefining what it means to have a sweeping television epic in the tokusatsu subgenre. They're going for the gold, folks. And if they keep this up, they just might get it. Last time, our resident genius amnesiac Kiryuu Sento had to face his old mentor Isurugi Soichi, who was revealed as the treacherous terroristic Blood Stalk. But winning one battle only means the coming war will be fought with greater intensity, as the show immediately addresses several concerns before I had the chance to even be bothered by them...
