Never underestimate toy company Bandai's ability to turn a mundane inanimate object into an uber-powerful super-weapon. You'll lose every bet you make against them. And so, we continue our hike through the tense valley of story that is the Kamen Rider Build television series. In what has got to be the most well-written opening act of any incarnation in the Kamen Rider franchise, we're treated to a funny, surprising, character-driven yet action-packed experience that punches you in the gut seconds after it uplifts. This is a master-class in how to produce special effects TV, and somehow, we're still just getting started. Last time, our smartypants hero Kiryuu Sento had some truth bombs dropped on his head as the villainous Blood Stalk was finally unmasked, and his identity has sent the...

After a short break from the high drama discussed in our last review, the Ultraman Geed series picks right back up for the final leg of its sprint toward the finish line. And with only four episodes left to make it happen, this show is pulling out all the stops, laying one side of the story to bed while digging up others from a restless tomb. It's daddy issues galore in episodes 22 and 23! We begin as the opportunistic writer Ishikari Aire arrives at her secluded home at night and senses she's being watched. Out of nowhere, the villainous Fukuide Kei is upon her, as creepy as he's ever looked, just standing there motionless, as if he's been waiting in that spot the whole time. It's a bit alarming, since she helped the poor alien through his hobo phase after Big Daddy Belial was killed...

Lucky Number Thirteen has arrived for the outstanding Kamen Rider Build, and there may be no better number than to drop this episode's huge revelation concerning one of the show's biggest, baddest villains so far. Okay, so it's not the most shocking plot twist of all time. We've been speculating for months about the identity of the venomous Blood Stalk and his unknown motivations as he sarcastically taunts our heroes into a frenzy week after week. What excites us the most about this story is not that one person or another was finally unmasked as the culprit, but how the show chooses to make light of it, and the way its characters react. After the apparent death of straight-laced lackey Utsumi at the hands of his own boss, Gentoku, we begin this episode in the middle of the phone conve...

Will someone please tell these people that their finale isn't for another several months? How is it possible that they keep coming out with one spectacular episode after another? This isn't how things normally go. I'm not used to this! Kamen Rider Build continues to take the rule book for not just Kamen Rider but weekly tokusatsu TV in general and toss it to the wind one page at a time, showing no signs of stopping this train as it speeds along the tracks toward Awesome Town. Last time, young fugitive Banjou Ryuuga took back a piece of what was taken from him when he was wrongly imprisoned for the murder of Katsuragi Takumi, at last transforming into Kamen Rider Cross-Z, the show's second hero next to his new pal, genius outlaw Kiryuu Sento. In the wake of Ryuuga's first official Ride...

Well, here we are. At the moment many of us have been waiting several weeks for: When the identity of the new hero of the Kamen Rider Build TV series is finally revealed. Of course, everybody and their momma had already figured it out ages ago, and it's doubtful the show was even trying to keep it a big secret this whole time. But for those of us who have been loving the show so far, and watching the quick but steady growth of Ryuuga as a character, coming into his own as a freedom fighter in this upside-down world our protagonists are living in, it's been something to look forward to. And the moment of truth definitely does not disappoint. Let's dive into the eleventh episode of this stellar series as I continue to wonder if they can possibly sustain this level of quality throughout at ...

It's been two weeks since our last visit with the motley crew of heroes, rivals, and frenemies of Kamen Rider Build, and they've chosen quite the cliffhanger to leave us dangling from. With the Touto science lab about to be invaded by the terrorist organization known as Faust, loyalties on every possible side are being tested at each corner, tensions are high, and the show has geared up for its most thrilling episode yet. How do they keep outdoing themselves like this? We begin with a rare recap that doesn't include a pseudo-fourth-wall-breaker of the main characters sarcastically commenting on their own show as usual, instead preferring to just roll the clips in as dramatic a fashion as they can muster, slowly building us toward the coming siege. After the opening credits (with a s...

Fukuide Kei is back with a fiery vengeance in the latest episodes of Ultraman Geed. After recent adventures saw him stumbling through the streets as a penniless vagrant, things weren't looking so hot for the dark Ultraman Belial's dutiful underling. Despite the big red guy having treated him like utter crap, Kei's not taking his boss' apparent demise very well. Meanwhile, the growing sentience of Geed's supercomputer may become a problem in the days ahead for the young master Asakura Riku as he locks horns with Kei once again. A series of ridiculously convenient coincidences all line up back-to-back, as Laiha and Riku happen to be near a TV as the news services report on Kei's disappearance and suspected murder of his editor a while back (when people thought he was just some random ...

When the lead heroes of four of Tatsunoko Productions' most beloved anime series are plucked from their separate stories and thrown into the CG animated blender that is Infini-T Force, the result is a surprisingly sensitive, character-focused musing on life, which just happens to have a truckload of explosions. Having been fed a steady diet of the shake-and-bake battle marathons of the tokusatsu subgenre, where some crossovers are more about how many collectible toys can be mixed and matched between the characters than how any of their lives may be affected by it all, this was a refreshing ride. That's not to ignore the many times heroes of Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, Ultraman and the like gather up from their respective continuities and tear up the battlefield. Indeed, many of those a...

Well, that settles it. With this episode ending the way it does, leading us into a direct continuation for next time, that means Kamen Rider Build has had ten straight episodes of pure plot with absolutely no narrative pitstops. Skip episodes at your own peril with this show, they're not taking any breaks. They may, on occasion, break you though. With one leap of development and dramatic revelation after another, no stones are left unturned with this amazing series and my love for it increases with each passing week. After another amazing recap, where genius amnesiac Kiryuu Sento learns that cafe owner Isurugi Soichi gave him his new name by throwing together the Japanese characters for "tank" (sen) and "rabbit" (to) and combining them with the family name of his barber Kiryuu, our st...

Ultraman Geed has multi-parters growing out of every orifice these days, doesn't it? With few exceptions, this series has kicked into high gear since we struck the halfway point, and I can't tell you how happy I am to be in this sweet spot. This is where things get interesting. Where we're done setting up the status quo and having random yarns about cute pet monsters or smelly saunas and are ready to pay off everything that's been building up these past dozen or so episodes. In our last review, young hero Asakura Riku grappled with the startling revelation that he was the son of the twisted Ultraman Belial, created as a means for the supervillain to acquire more power in his latest worlds-conquering scheme. We also found ourselves smack dab in the middle of one of those multi-parters ...
