After the tragic and unexpected passing of Tsuru Hiromi as the original Bulma, a new actress has been hired to succeed her as the blue-haired engineer in the action anime series Dragon Ball Super. Singer and actress Hisakawa Aya has a list of credits as long as a kamehameha wave, adding her voice talents to a plethora of well-known geek properties over the years, including the previous chapter in the DB saga, Dragon Ball Z. Among her other works, she served as the voice of nerd queen Sailor Mercury in the original Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, the sword-wielding Xianghua in the Soul Calibur video games, and the sweet-toothed lion guardian Cerberus in Cardcaptor Sakura. Hisakawa has touched many other beloved properties in her long tenure, including Transformers, Oh My Goddess!, Dete...

Plot twist. After Saban Brands, the handlers of the long-running Power Rangers franchise parted ways with original merchandise collaborators Bandai America, a new announcement was swiftly made, formally showing Hasbro Inc. their seat at the dynasty table. Promptly afterward came Hasbro's introduction to the latest incarnation of the Power Rangers legacy in the form of 2019's new season: Power Rangers Beast Morphers. It's a week of revelations for this undying brand. And this may be just the beginning. Electing Hasbro as the new shepherds for the franchise seemed like a no-brainer after we reviewed some dispiriting facts on the subject of Bandai America's business practices recently versus the comparatively outstanding performance of Hasbro in recent years. They've proven themselves as...

With the clink of champagne glasses, we begin our newest entry into the long-running Super Sentai franchise. And as the 42nd incarnation of this ongoing saga, Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger has a lot to live up to. After achieving some success by mixing up their well-worn formula with the previous series, chief among my hopes for their latest endeavor was that they'd continue to reevaluate and reinvent their style, which sometimes felt a bit old hat. It's fitting then that we kick off the new story in a casino, as Lupinranger VS Patranger is in a gambling mood this premiere week. Let's zipline into the first action-packed episode and see if it paid off. We open with an exquisitely over-the-top shyster taking money from a desperate man who seems not to notice th...

Giant bugs with laser-antennae. Bloodthirsty fiends from the depths of outer space. Titanic robots of unparalleled strength. Godzilla has been victorious in battle with dozens of seemingly unbeatable adversaries. But perhaps none as fierce as the latest threat standing before him. The menace of a broken heart. In this stop-motion comedy piece from Youtube channel MootroidXProductions, the radioactive lizard serves up his scorching heart for the object of his affection and a series of misunderstandings may lead to devastating consequences. His first romantic troubles were featured in a video a few years ago, only for the battle to rage on yet again this year, as we approach another Singles Awareness Day. Here's the original 2016 video, followed by its 2018 reboot. Because it's not j...

That… That's a Star Trek reference for anybody who, uh… Nevermind. The end of Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger comes with a bittersweet quality as we close out on this space adventure television series. Through 48 episodes, the crew of the Orion have traveled the universe righting the wrongs of the oppressive Jark Matter empire, working to save it from the clutches of the ruthless Don Armage. It's an exciting final chapter. Though I can't help but shake this feeling. That, as I look back on the last leg of the journey, some thoughts probably shouldn't be lingering in my mind. Thoughts like "Well, they did a lot better with this negative thing than that other show." As if failing less obviously than a past disappointment should be counted as a positive rather than just a given. Suffice it to...

The time of monsters is upon us once again, as the kaiju wranglers of the TOKU television station is prepping to deliver another massive bounty to our doorsteps this fine February. Starting and ending with the giant hero adventures of the long-running Ultraman franchise, with the standalone tokusatsu film Outer Man in-between. Three different incarnations of Tsuburaya Productions' famed Ultra Series are launching their official American TV schedules, and we've lost count of how many that makes now. The recent list of titles to premiere in the US, like the silvery protagonists of this ongoing franchise, just keeps growing. First up, we have Ultraman Gaia. This series originally aired in 1998 as the third in the 90s Heisei Era trilogy, though taking place in a new continuity separate fr...
