It's been a wonderful season for tokusatsu. From the colorful, high-flying adventure of Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger to the intense, take-no-prisoners action of Kamen Rider Build, the world of special effects television has rarely been so exciting. And, as we inch closer to the tearful farewell to the spacey super-team of Kyuranger and ramp up toward the introduction of their successors in the upcoming Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger vs Keisatsu Sentai Patranger, here's a small picture gallery to celebrate the era of these Toei Company heroes. This brief sampling comes courtesy of HeroVision, the tokusatsu-themed publication featuring high-quality images of the stars and assorted memorabilia from their fantastical series, as well as original interviews and commentary from the people who bring the...

Kamen River Kiva is making a comeback. As I clutch my pearls at the thought of it already being a decade since this amazing fantasy action series left the airwaves, Kiva's celebrating its tenth anniversary in style. We've already heard of the new Blu-ray set coming to home video, as well as the introduction of fan-favorite actor Takeda Touhei making his recent debut as a mysterious new superpowered figure in the current series Kamen Rider Build. But why stop there? Surely there's some other way to bring honor to the bat-themed hero and his outrageous circle of friends and rivals as we look back on their wacky adventures together? Well, that's where Kamen Rider The Diner comes in. As previously mentioned, Kamen Rider The Diner has been operating in Ikebukuro, Japan since 2011, serving ...

It's funny. I started out reviewing Kamen Rider Build under the assumption that, at some point, it would be less necessary to discuss each episode of the series on an individual basis. Like with most entries into the Kamen Rider franchise (to say nothing of its counterparts in Super Sentai), I expected that we'd eventually reach a point where installments would feel less substantial and thus, waiting a while between reviews would make perfect sense. Nope! Kamen Rider Build has consistently flipped the script on our expectations, bringing new and exciting twists on its narrative week after week, leaving very little room for its fans to lose interest as we barrel through toward the finish line. Before the show's brief hiatus, we were left on a cliffhanger that spelled potential doom for...

Every card-carrying Super Sentai fan can rejoice, as the first major glimpse at the newest in the long-running super-team franchise has dropped. The latest series, Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger is poised to dazzle viewers new and old alike, as the first of its kind to feature two brand new groups of transforming heroes battling it out in this weekly special effects action extravaganza. And so far, it's not looking too shabby. The brief video opens with the dashing LupinRed, leader of the roguish band of thieves known as Lupinranger, carrying a card-like item, tossing it toward the screen, signaling the start of the visual feast that follows. Not a single human face among them so far, the six heroes we can expect to see in the show's opening episodes are buttin...

Senkosha Productions is celebrating sixty years of justice with the anniversaries of some of the tokusatsu subgenre's pioneering superstars, who paved the way for the many heroic stories to follow decades after their inception. Among them are the classic superhero shows Moonlight Mask and Planet Prince, as well as the mecha series Super Robot Red Baron. 1958's black-and-white Moonlight Mask series was hailed as one of Japan's first live-action television superheroes. His identity never truly revealed (though heavily implied with the constant disappearing acts played by lead character Iwai Juro, conveniently absent when the title hero shows up to save the day), his adventures took him across 130 episodes and 6 movies. Within this massive tome of stories was TV's first famed kaiju, the ...

Who needs breaks? Not Kamen Rider Build, that's for sure! Since the newest addition to the Kamen Rider television legacy burst onto the scene, they've barreled forward full steam ahead, running right over every narrative pot hole that could have slowed it down along the way, redefining what it means to have a sweeping television epic in the tokusatsu subgenre. They're going for the gold, folks. And if they keep this up, they just might get it. Last time, our resident genius amnesiac Kiryuu Sento had to face his old mentor Isurugi Soichi, who was revealed as the treacherous terroristic Blood Stalk. But winning one battle only means the coming war will be fought with greater intensity, as the show immediately addresses several concerns before I had the chance to even be bothered by them...

Never underestimate toy company Bandai's ability to turn a mundane inanimate object into an uber-powerful super-weapon. You'll lose every bet you make against them. And so, we continue our hike through the tense valley of story that is the Kamen Rider Build television series. In what has got to be the most well-written opening act of any incarnation in the Kamen Rider franchise, we're treated to a funny, surprising, character-driven yet action-packed experience that punches you in the gut seconds after it uplifts. This is a master-class in how to produce special effects TV, and somehow, we're still just getting started. Kamen Rider tops the Japanese box office again, with this final phase of the Heisei Era putting a cap on the current chapter of their long-running superhero franchise. Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FINAL: Build & Ex-Aid with Legend Riders came in at #1 on the charts last week, surpassing the success of last year's annual winter crossover event, proving the lone masked heroes (when brought together so as not to be quite so lone anymore) still have what it takes to capture an audience. As previously mentioned, the film gathers the title heroes from several past incarnations of the long and storied Rider saga, returning a number of lead stars (and multiple supporting actors) to our screens for one last hurrah (for now). Among them were Fukushi Sato as Gentaro aka high school student...

The next cast in line to join the swelling ranks of the Super Sentai franchise makes up not one super-team, but two. Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patoranger makes history by pitting two equally important groups of superpowered heroes against each other in a co-headlining battle royale. The first official poster is here, and with it comes a brief synopsis of the coming events. Right off the bat, the logo containing the names of both teams looks like that of a "versus movie", as previously mentioned. Observed separately, the two halves don't even look like they belong to the same series. A simple, but effective way to illustrate the differences between the two groups, despite some of their implied similarities. One such similarity can be noted quite easily, with a gla...

Sentai vs Sentai in 2018?!

News, Super Sentai, Toku
In an odd turn of events, Toei Company has filed trademarks for two different names for the next Super Sentai series coming in 2018! The confirmed trademarks state that the teams will be known as Keisatsu Sentai Patoranger, and Kaito Sentai Lupinranger. Now, as the names indicate, the 2018 Super Sentai series may/will feature two teams pit against one another; a team of cops (Patoranger) versus a team of thieves (Lupinranger)! However, this could also just be a similar case to Ninpu Sentai Hurricanger, where the team consisted of two groups, the initial three Hurricangers and the two secondary Gouraigers. It may be too soon to tell what these names really indicate, but interest in the series is quickly building. Once other details are confirmed, updates will follow, so please stay t...
