Another day, another crossover event in the land of cool guys who rarely look at explosions as their enemies pun all the way to fiery doom. This time, it's Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger who steps up to bat. The series about a crew of space-faring heroes fighting against the unscrupulous Jark Matter only recently ended its year-long run on television, but that's not stopping them from tearing it up with the best of them in the seemingly unending cycle of Toei Company's team-up extravaganzas. Interestingly enough, some members on this particular team already have some experience with their latest companions in intergalactic day-saving. It's Space Sheriff Gavan! And he's bringing his disparate team of tokusatsu randoms from the newly-created Space Squad along for the party, in the new Uchuu Sentai...

Here's a little something to jam to while waiting for your next fix when it comes to the heroes of the tokusatsu world. From Kamen Rider to Super Sentai to Power Rangers, Youtuber Studio Megaane has been delivering one nostalgic twist after another on the special-effects shows we at Henshin Justice Unlimited hold most dear. Plus quite a few other titles both of the live-action and animated variety. Studio Megaane creates music tracks in the style of old school 8-bit video games, generating a unique sound not to be duplicated, especially for those of us who fondly remember the days when this was pretty much all you had when mashing buttons and cursing the incredibly difficult games of the era. You haven't known true struggle until you've been felled by your hundredth accidental landing...

I so want to make a Kamen Rider Hibiki joke right now, but nothing comes to mind. Alas. Suda Masaki's star has risen considerably since his stint as the quirky second part of the half-and-half super-detective in 2009's Kamen Rider W. Leaping from one prestigious role in television and film to another, he's grown more popular than his talent agency deems appropriate for him to return to cameo in the Kamen Rider franchise that many of us know him best from. But as he continues to further branch out in the entertainment world, he gears up to release his new album, including some previously-released tracks as well as new pieces exclusively for this debut album. Here's Suda singing "Scenery I've Never Seen Before" for a commercial celebrating Japanese national soccer. https://youtu....

That… That's a Star Trek reference for anybody who, uh… Nevermind. The end of Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger comes with a bittersweet quality as we close out on this space adventure television series. Through 48 episodes, the crew of the Orion have traveled the universe righting the wrongs of the oppressive Jark Matter empire, working to save it from the clutches of the ruthless Don Armage. It's an exciting final chapter. Though I can't help but shake this feeling. That, as I look back on the last leg of the journey, some thoughts probably shouldn't be lingering in my mind. Thoughts like "Well, they did a lot better with this negative thing than that other show." As if failing less obviously than a past disappointment should be counted as a positive rather than just a given. Suffice it to...

It's been a wonderful season for tokusatsu. From the colorful, high-flying adventure of Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger to the intense, take-no-prisoners action of Kamen Rider Build, the world of special effects television has rarely been so exciting. And, as we inch closer to the tearful farewell to the spacey super-team of Kyuranger and ramp up toward the introduction of their successors in the upcoming Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger vs Keisatsu Sentai Patranger, here's a small picture gallery to celebrate the era of these Toei Company heroes. This brief sampling comes courtesy of HeroVision, the tokusatsu-themed publication featuring high-quality images of the stars and assorted memorabilia from their fantastical series, as well as original interviews and commentary from the people who bring the...

I was determined not to come back with another Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger review that talked predominately about lead character Lucky, but it seems my fate was written in the constellations. This show, about a team of futuristic space trekkers boldly going up against the Jark Matter Empire, quickly became a new favorite for me, winning me over with its adventurous theme, great characters, and fun ideas. To this day, my feelings in that regard have not changed. Though I suppose I've squished those sentiments into a tiny side pocket now that the show has so aggressively pursued one of Super Sentai's worst habits: Putting an inordinate amount of attention onto the dude in red. The luckiest liberator in the whole wide universe is not only the unofficially official leader of this enormous team...

Fortune Sentai Luckyranger or How I Met Your Messiah: A Kyuranger Review

Well, here we are for another Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger review. And while I'm still very much enjoying this spacey super-team series, I have to be honest and say that I'm a little disappointed with one key factor. You guessed it, kids. It starts with "luck" and ends with "eeee" . The sad thing is that I'm actually not someone who dislikes Lucky, our strange and often shouty de facto leader of this band of galactic liberators. When others complained that he was too in-your-face, I shrugged indifferently, having enjoyed his part in this wacky ensemble of futuristic alien saviors bent on defeating the oppressive Jark Matter organization. Of course, this was back when the show was just getting started, and the new car smell had yet to wear off. Every sight and sound was fresh, and there was ...

Review: Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger DX Saiko Kyutama

Super Sentai, Toku, Toys
Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger has been running for 30 episodes and the Kyutama gimmick has been stale for a while now, but thankfully the Saiko Kyutama changes the game! This Kyutama is huge and stylized to really stand out from the bunch with its red coloring and beautiful blue ring. It also has its own electronics but unlike the Hikari Kyutama that tried (and failed) to work its sounds in tandem with the Seiza Blaster, the Saiko Kyutama tells the Seiza Blaster to sit back, relax and let it handle all the awesome new sounds. So what can it do? Well, for starters we have 5 attacks with just the Kyutama itself, these have yet to be seen in the show (as of this recording) so we don't know what they do just yet. After you insert it into the Seiza Blaster (or hold the button down with your fin...
