Galaxy Rangers: The Power Rangers Test Pilot Hidden in the DVD Box Set

A hidden Easter egg tucked into the bonus discs of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers DVD box set surfaces Galaxy Rangers, the test pilot Haim Saban sent to Bandai America in May 1992 before the franchise had settled on its final name and cast.

Set in a future where an intergalactic sorceress threatens a peaceful solar system, the pilot’s footage splices new material with existing Zyuranger action shots. Mark Dacascos appears as the Red Ranger analog, described in the pitch as “Victor Lee: An expert in martial arts,” alongside a differently drawn supporting cast: a “detective with an unusual style” standing in for Zack Taylor, a “clumsy but always clever aerobics instructor” for Kimberly Harte, an “athletic heart-throb with a body of steel” for Billy Cranston, and an “intellectual and struggling novelist” for Trini Crystal. Much of the non-Zyuranger footage appears to be reused from Dacascos’s early-career work on the Japanese series Bioman.

To access the Easter egg, viewers highlight, without selecting, “Lord Zedd’s Monster Heads” on the first bonus disc’s special features menu, then press the arrow keys until the Power Rangers logo’s lightning bolt turns blue, then select it to play the pilot.
