Akibaranger the Movie Was Never Real, Just an Elaborate Joke

At Tamashii Nation 2012, the Akibaranger booth displayed posters and advance-ticket giveaway items for a film titled Akibaranger the Movie: Treasure of the Maid Empire, a movie that, despite the convincing promotional push, doesn’t exist and was never going to be released in theaters.

The joke traces back to a tweet from user marc_1109 the previous May, floating the idea of two hypothetical Akibaranger films: one called Treasure of the Maid Empire and a crossover with the Gavan parody character Space Sheriff Gavian. The idea spread on 2ch, where enough fans jokingly wished for it that the Akibaranger staff decided to commit to the bit fully, producing fake posters, tickets, and a limited-edition “AkibaRed Special Color” ticket gift to sell the illusion. The poster itself leaned into its own fiction, describing the nonexistent film as “a big hit if you just use your imagination.”
