20th Anniversary Sailor Moon Website Updated with Teaser Image and Title

The official 20th Anniversary site for Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon was updated with the first details of the new series, titled Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal. Its synopsis described Usagi Tsukino, a clumsy but energetic middle school girl who meets the black cat Luna and transforms into Sailor Moon, taking up a mission to find the Illusionary Silver Crystal alongside other Sailor guardians while the Dark Kingdom’s Queen Beryl seeks the same crystal for herself.

Producer Atsutoshi Umezawa, known for the Pretty Cure franchise, said Crystal would adapt Naoko Takeuchi’s original manga from scratch rather than remake the previous anime. Munehisa Sakai, known for One Piece and Suite Precure, was set to direct at Toei Animation, the studio behind the original series. Yuji Kobayashi wrote the scripts, Momoiro Clover Z performed the theme song, Yukie Sako served as character designer, and Yasuharu Takanashi composed the score; King Records produced the soundtrack. Art direction was credited to Takashi Kurahashi and Yumi Hosaka.

The series, adapted from a manga first launched in the magazine Nakayoshi in 1992, was confirmed to premiere in July and stream simultaneously worldwide on Niconico, though whether the stream would carry subtitles remained unconfirmed. The update followed the 20th Anniversary project’s 2012 launch, which had already included a stage musical and an ongoing English-language republication of the manga by Kodansha USA.
