Attack on Titan Live-Action Film Adds Haruma Miura, Anime Gets Recompiled Movies

Author Hajime Isayama’s manga Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan), first published in 2009, had already become a major franchise by way of its television anime adaptation when Toho officially announced a live-action film in December 2013, with a script by Yuusuke Watanabe and direction by Shinji Higuchi.

Actor Haruma Miura was confirmed to join the film’s cast, though it was not yet announced which of the story’s three central characters he would play. Portions of the production were set to film on the deserted island of Hashima, also known as Gunkanjima or Battleship Island, off the coast of Nagasaki, standing in for the walled city that protects what remains of humanity in the story. The live-action film was slated for a 2015 release.

Alongside the casting news, the anime series was set to be recompiled into two theatrical films with new 5.1 remastering and the original voice cast reprising their roles, both directed by series helmer Tetsuro Araki. Attack on Titan: Crimson Bow and Arrow was to cover episodes 1 through 13 with a winter release, followed by Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom, covering episodes 14 through 25, in 2015. Funimation’s Blu-ray release of the anime’s first season was set for June 23, 2014.
