Petition to Have Matt Austin Direct New MMPR Reboot Movie
After Saban Brands announced a reboot of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, fans began floating the idea of a former Ranger directing the new film. Matt Austin, who played Bridge in Power Rangers S.P.D., had expressed interest in directing, and fans organized a petition asking Saban to at least consider him for the job. The petition, hosted on iPetitions, invited supporters to add their names to the growing list backing Austin’s candidacy.
Discussion around the announcement centered partly on a short film Austin had posted online, described as a proof-of-concept mashup, which some debated as thin evidence of readiness to direct an action-driven science-fiction feature. Others countered by pointing to Marc Webb, who had directed music videos and romantic comedies before taking on The Amazing Spider-Man, as a precedent for a director’s prior genre not predicting the result.
