Welcome back to Super Hero Synopses, where our Lord and toku savior has risen! Yes, we're blending seasons again on Kamen Rider Zi-O, as even though this is the double episode tribute for previous series Kamen Rider OOO, Dan Kuroto from Kamen Rider Ex-Aid has returned to life again like some kind of Dangerous Zombie. Why is he appearing here and not back in episodes for his own series? Well, Bandai have just begun running a promotional campaign where Japanese shoppers can obtain a free Genm Ride Watch when they purchase other Kamen Rider merchandise, such as the Zi-O toys related to OOO that are also released this weekend! It's almost as if this is all some sort of extended toy commercial or something... Will Dan Kuroto chew all of the scenery? Will Eiji get the opportunity to ...

Welcome back to Super Hero Synopses, where we always put our weapon controls in the most inconvenient places! This week on Kaito Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger, the long-missing ice man finally returns. Zamigo, Kogure and the Global Police's intelligence division conveniently all discover a new Collection Piece right before a rare opportunity to retrieve it presents itself. In the end, the real winner will be metallic double-agent Noel, who not only goes some way to repair his relationship with his fellow officers but manages to get a pair of shiny shoulder cannons for good measure. We're about three quarters of the way through the show now, so what do you think of the series so far? What do you think will happen in the final quarter? Will Zamigo become a more regu...

Welcome back to Super Hero Synopses, where pitching a tent in someone else's premises isn't crazy at all. Today, we're catching up on the most recent two episodes of Kaito Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger. In the first episode, Keiichiro (Patren#1) must learn to tame his temper or the results could be quite explosive, while in the second he attempts to extend the hand of friendship only to have it knocked away. But really he's just a conduit for telling stories focused on those other characters rather than the focus himself. Could you use a handy anger-removing device? Will the two Reds manage to repair their friendship? will the two teams' combined mecha continue to pop up randomly like this? Let us know what you think about this series and any other toku shows you ...

Welcome back to Super Hero Synopses, where mayonnaise is the perfect condiment to put on dried squid. This double episode of Kamen Rider Zi-O is dedicated to Kamen Rider Wizard. It's also the first time we get to see a returning secondary Rider not accompanied by the Rider being paid tribute to. As this is Zi-O, it's perhaps appropriate that they do this with a Rider themed after the king of the jungle, Nitou Kosuke a.k.a. Kamen Rider Beast. Nitou doesn't get ensnared too deeply into the plot but it's very nice to see him and they manage to pack in a whole bunch of his quirks and one more transformation. Did you enjoy seeing all three Time Jackers acting together on one plan? What do you think happened between Woz and Geiz in their past? Which other secondary Riders would you like ...

Welcome back to Super Hero Synopses, where frankly we're quite literally beside ourselves! Kaito Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger has been dropping regular hints that Kogure may not be entirely on the level with the phantom thieves. Lest anyone think there's something sinister about him, today's episode is dedicated to showing that he does have a good side, and that his bad side is really quite ineffectual. He's not the only one who will get to show another side to himself, as it turns out that the Lupin Magnum is not just a weapon but also an autonomous humanoid gunslinging mecha! Are they bluffing or are Kogure's intentions more pure than previously implied? Did you enjoy the Lupin Magnum's debut fight as a mecha? Did you sympathise with the Gangler being an introv...

Welcome back to Super Hero Synopses, where creepy smiles are a specialty! Technically this is still a Kamen Rider Fourze story, but this week is all about the Kamen Rider Faiz guys. It seems the changes to the timeline have made them buddies now, but it wouldn't be those two characters if they weren't at each other's throats anyway. In a brief dive into some deeper trivia, it turns out that the 'shooting star' mention was a Faiz reference all along rather than a simple name-check for the Fourze character, Kamen Rider Meteor. Do the giant shoulder phones on the Faiz armour get good reception? Did you enjoy the blending of two different legend Riders into a single story? Could Takumi and Masato return later in the series? Please do share your thoughts with us in our forum or over on ...

Welcome back to Super Hero Synopses, where melting a hole straight through someone's torso doesn't count as 'gore'. It's new toy day on Kaito Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger as the Lupin Magnum is introduced. There's just one catch: in order to obtain it you must be the kind of hardhearted son-of-a-gun who'd shoot their own loved one down. Luckily, the phantom thieves have someone to hand. Their new prize isn't safe for long though, as a gun-loving, self-declared  'Hell's Guard Dog' (no, not Doggie Kruger, though it was indeed Tetsu Inada providing the voice for this character) wants to add the weapon to his own collection. As the picture below demonstrates, things don't go well for this naughty pooch. What are Kogure's true intentions? Is Kairi really going to ...

Welcome back to Super Hero Synopses, where friendship will take on the universe and things are always settled man-to-man! This week, Kamen Rider Zi-O attempts to up the ante (or perhaps just cover for a lack of returning actors) with a double tribute. As such, our time traveling trio have to infiltrate a certain high school to investigate the cause of multiple missing person cases. It seems that a number of young ladies are attracting the attention of the franchise's most infamous psychopath. But before we can confront him we must check in with the Kamen Rider Club. *thumps myself twice in the chest before pointing forwards* Given who is after the victims, is it possible that they're secretly Orphanochs? Did you feel the absence of Sota Fukushi (Gentaro) or did you think that the e...

Welcome back to Super Hero Synopses, where sometimes heroes don't follow the script correctly. This week introduces the mysterious woman (no really, that's what she's called in the opening credits) who possesses her own R/B Gyro and seemingly also possesses a very long lifespan based on her comment about knowing a historical figure who died in 1900! She exhibits a particular interest in the brothers' younger sister Asahi, who seems to have secrets of her own. Outside of the main story, Orb fans should once again enjoy the numerous references to his show (note the familiar hat and coat hung up in Aizen's office - I wonder if he cosplayed before he got his own Gyro?) and Horoboros continues to make the kind of impression that will no doubt have him menacing many more Ultramen in the yea...

As fans of Japanese Henshin Hero shows, most of our focus inevitably falls upon three franchises: Super Sentai / Power Rangers, Kamen Rider, and Ultraman. But there's a vast array of other heroes out there. Beyond The Big Three is an occasional series that looks at tokusatsu films and TV series that lie beyond those three franchises. Do they deserve their time in the sun or should they stay in the shadow of the big three? There's only one way to find out, and that's to check them out! The Franchise The subject of this first article is Garo: Kami no Kiba, the latest movie release from the venerable Garo franchise. Garo is a relative newcomer compared to the big three, as the first season only began broadcasting in 2005, and the series traveled a very different path; Airing after midni...
