If you're looking for something new to get into this year, and have a mind for supernatural mayhem with a twist, look no further than The Returners, the new book from up-and-coming author Lee T. Davis. Sporting heavy inspirations from the world of Japanese anime, live-action special effects, high-flying Hong Kong action, and Hollywood sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, this tale of otherworldly antiheroes is not to be missed. As the official blurb states, 2019's The Returners (not to be confused with an older, unrelated release of the same name) gives the spotlight to uncommon protagonists for the action/adventure genre. And that's especially true if we're only counting stories that aren't a prequel, a sequel, a midquel, any-other-kinda-quel, or anything based on an existing property to beg...

As we get ready to pile into movie theaters for the new Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse film, we return to an old gem in the annals of live-action special effects TV, with the strange anomaly that was 1978's Spider-Man. A rare Japanese-produced adaptation from an original Marvel Comics creation, this Spidey bears some similarities to the more familiar wall-crawler from New York, but in other ways... maybe not so much. Still, the hero, whose televised adventures lasted 41 episodes, has made some strides in recent pop culture, having appearances in comic book crossovers where he encounters other webslingers in the Spider-Man multiverse, along with his giant mech Leopardon. Because nothing says "spider power" like a kaiju-sized robot themed after a cat. Here's the Honest Trailer for...

2008 saw the return of Kamen Rider to American television after over a decade of absence. The Japanese action hero franchise survived its ups and downs with the previous English-language adaptation in the form of 1995's divisive Masked Rider only to face a new challenge when Adness Entertainment picked up the brand rights for their own take. The American Kamen Rider Dragon Knight would adapt the visuals from the original Kamen Rider Ryuki, but it would have a tough time finding a big audience on the now-defunct CW4Kids television block. But, for a passionate few, it represented the possibilities for a beloved franchise to branch out toward wider appeal someday soon. Some of us are still waiting for the time when Kamen Rider may be recognized as easily as the likes of the Avengers, ...

The Immortal Red Fox is back for more action in Volume 2 of their web series and comic book adventures. The Immortal Red Fox isn’t your typical indie Tokusatsu web series. Based on Shonen Style Manga, our story follows a man, who lacks tact and the ability to survive on his own. An American transplant to Japan, who can barely stand on his own two feet, unknowingly unlocks a gateway to the past, breaking a seal that was put in place by the greatest warrior eons ago. Now, our new hero must continue fighting a war and take on a legacy that has been 500 years in the making. Before he can return to an ordinary life again, he will battle monsters, foot soldiers and generals like you’ve never encountered. Instead of treating his powers like a curse, he must embrace them as a gift! He ...

Toy Review: LUPINRANGER VS PATRANGER DX Siren Striker & Victory Striker

Kaito Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger winds down with its final two VS Vehicles, though both are for the Lupinrangers. First up, we have the DX Siren Striker. Siren Striker is an awesome boxy tank, complete with standard Patranger sirens, big red and gold treads, and a big, extendable cannon. I love the look of this thing as a vehicle and it feels great in the hand. It also looks awesome on the DX VS Changer, giving a new henshin jingle for Super Patren Ichi- I mean Super Lupin X.......because that makes sense.  Odd show choices aside, the sounds are fantastic and the reason you should pick this toy up is because, much like every other VS Vehicle, the mecha formation is pretty lackluster. Once again, in the official configuration, the arms are both Splash and Magic again...

It's that time again. The Kamen Rider franchise is ready for another annual blowout with their latest winter movie, Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FOREVER set to debut this December. Shortly after whetting appetites with the official poster, Toei Company has released their first trailer for the film, and it's a rather emotional affair. We're getting real meta up in this joint, as Kamen Rider is being talked about within the story as an actual TV show enjoyed by adoring fans. There's also a load of nostalgic clips from the many years of the Heisei Era, starting with 2000's seminal Kamen Rider Kuuga. Plus, explosions. Lots of explosions. https://youtu.be/_A0AcF7XGDs Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FOREVER hits Japanese theaters December 22, 2018.   You might also like: I...

"If Kamen Rider were available, which series would you want to see first?" This is the question posed to the Twitter audience last week, in a poll provided for fans of the live-action special effects genre by TV and streaming service TOKU. The Olympusat Inc. venture has been providing tokusatsu aficionados with an array of action-packed events, such as Tsuburaya Productions' popular giant hero franchise, Ultraman, as well as Gridman, and many other esoteric action, sci-fi, fantasy, and horror pieces from across Asia. This is the first time we've heard that TOKU could be putting out feelers for the Kamen Rider franchise. The long-running brand, about a transforming hero facing new monstrous enemies in weekly battles, has spawned dozens of annual series since its debut in 1971, reach...

The Kamen Rider franchise is getting even more generational with the latest in their series of movies based on the ongoing action hero franchise, Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FOREVER. And here's the poster to prove it. As previously mentioned, they keep trying to end this Heisei Era, but something's always standing in the way. A gaggle of heroes from recent (and not-so-recent) years in the Rider saga are returning for one last (lol) battle to save the world from evil. A new poster has been unveiled, to give you a taste of the combat to come. Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FOREVER hits theaters December 22, 2018.   You might also like: This New POWER RANGERS Cereal Wants in Your Mouth Toy Review: KAMEN RIDER ZI-O DX Faiz, Hibiki, Kabuto, Den-O Ride Watches, Faiz Phone...
