2008 saw the return of Kamen Rider to American television after over a decade of absence. The Japanese action hero franchise survived its ups and downs with the previous English-language adaptation in the form of 1995's divisive Masked Rider only to face a new challenge when Adness Entertainment picked up the brand rights for their own take. The American Kamen Rider Dragon Knight would adapt the visuals from the original Kamen Rider Ryuki, but it would have a tough time finding a big audience on the now-defunct CW4Kids television block. But, for a passionate few, it represented the possibilities for a beloved franchise to branch out toward wider appeal someday soon. Some of us are still waiting for the time when Kamen Rider may be recognized as easily as the likes of the Avengers, ...

It's that time again. The Kamen Rider franchise is ready for another annual blowout with their latest winter movie, Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FOREVER set to debut this December. Shortly after whetting appetites with the official poster, Toei Company has released their first trailer for the film, and it's a rather emotional affair. We're getting real meta up in this joint, as Kamen Rider is being talked about within the story as an actual TV show enjoyed by adoring fans. There's also a load of nostalgic clips from the many years of the Heisei Era, starting with 2000's seminal Kamen Rider Kuuga. Plus, explosions. Lots of explosions. https://youtu.be/_A0AcF7XGDs Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FOREVER hits Japanese theaters December 22, 2018.   You might also like: I...

Is KAMEN RIDER Coming to American TV?

"If Kamen Rider were available, which series would you want to see first?" This is the question posed to the Twitter audience last week, in a poll provided for fans of the live-action special effects genre by TV and streaming service TOKU. The Olympusat Inc. venture has been providing tokusatsu aficionados with an array of action-packed events, such as Tsuburaya Productions' popular giant hero franchise, Ultraman, as well as Gridman, and many other esoteric action, sci-fi, fantasy, and horror pieces from across Asia. This is the first time we've heard that TOKU could be putting out feelers for the Kamen Rider franchise. The long-running brand, about a transforming hero facing new monstrous enemies in weekly battles, has spawned dozens of annual series since its debut in 1971, reach...

The Kamen Rider franchise is getting even more generational with the latest in their series of movies based on the ongoing action hero franchise, Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FOREVER. And here's the poster to prove it. As previously mentioned, they keep trying to end this Heisei Era, but something's always standing in the way. A gaggle of heroes from recent (and not-so-recent) years in the Rider saga are returning for one last (lol) battle to save the world from evil. A new poster has been unveiled, to give you a taste of the combat to come. Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FOREVER hits theaters December 22, 2018.   You might also like: This New POWER RANGERS Cereal Wants in Your Mouth Toy Review: KAMEN RIDER ZI-O DX Faiz, Hibiki, Kabuto, Den-O Ride Watches, Faiz Phone...

Super Hero Synopses | Rival Royalty

Welcome back to Super Hero Synopses, where our Lord and toku savior has risen! Yes, we're blending seasons again on Kamen Rider Zi-O, as even though this is the double episode tribute for previous series Kamen Rider OOO, Dan Kuroto from Kamen Rider Ex-Aid has returned to life again like some kind of Dangerous Zombie. Why is he appearing here and not back in episodes for his own series? Well, Bandai have just begun running a promotional campaign where Japanese shoppers can obtain a free Genm Ride Watch when they purchase other Kamen Rider merchandise, such as the Zi-O toys related to OOO that are also released this weekend! It's almost as if this is all some sort of extended toy commercial or something... Will Dan Kuroto chew all of the scenery? Will Eiji get the opportunity to ...

Toy Review: KAMEN RIDER ZI-O DX Faiz, Hibiki, Kabuto, Den-O Ride Watches, Faiz Phone & Ride Watch Dizer

Blog, Kamen Rider, Reviews, Toku, Toys
Kamen Rider Zi-O's gimmick continues on strong with 4 new entries. Our first one is for Kamen Rider Geiz, the Faiz Ride Watch, then the next 3 for Zi-O being Kabuto, Hibiki and Den-O Ride Watches. These all function the same as the Ride Watches of the past. Bottom line: if you like the gimmick as a whole, the sounds these toys make, or the Rider they represent, then you're going to like these toys. https://youtu.be/-HjGpuylB-c https://youtu.be/Wh7bvYNHHb0 https://youtu.be/_7ZUIQmRfLY Den-O is the only one that comes with a stipulation that the buyer may or may not be okay with. Den-O's Ride Watch is in a set with the DX Ride Watch Dizer. It's basically this year's version of the Pandora Panel from Kamen Rider Build but with less story significance. Either way, it nearly doubles the a...

Super Hero Synopses | Pass The Mayo

Welcome back to Super Hero Synopses, where mayonnaise is the perfect condiment to put on dried squid. This double episode of Kamen Rider Zi-O is dedicated to Kamen Rider Wizard. It's also the first time we get to see a returning secondary Rider not accompanied by the Rider being paid tribute to. As this is Zi-O, it's perhaps appropriate that they do this with a Rider themed after the king of the jungle, Nitou Kosuke a.k.a. Kamen Rider Beast. Nitou doesn't get ensnared too deeply into the plot but it's very nice to see him and they manage to pack in a whole bunch of his quirks and one more transformation. Did you enjoy seeing all three Time Jackers acting together on one plan? What do you think happened between Woz and Geiz in their past? Which other secondary Riders would you like ...

Welcome to a brand new installment of Scholars Talking Toku. My name is Justin Mullis and I’m a scholar working in the academic field of religious studies who also happens to harbor a life long love of Japanese pop-culture. Last year an essay I wrote, “Notes from the Land of Light: Observations on Religious Elements Seen in Ultraman”, was published in the book Giant Creatures in Our World: Essays on Kaiju and American Popular Culture (2017, McFarland Press) edited by Camille D.G. Mustachio and Jason Barr. I recommend you pick it up! One of my fellow contributors to Giant Creatures in Our World is scholar Seth Kim who is an Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt University. Toy Review: KAMEN RIDER ZI-O DX Fourze Ride Watch & RKF Ghost / Ex-Aid Armor

Kamen Rider, Reviews, Toku, Toys
The latest collectible toy for the Kamen Rider Zi-O series is the DX Fourze Ride Watch. As far as Ride Watches go, it's right in line with the rest. Multiple sound effects based on button presses, a henshin jingle and a finisher sound. Overall, if you are like me and absolutely love this gimmick line, this is another fantastic entry. https://youtu.be/QnTAfxPTkuE The RKF (Rider Kicks Figure) line isn't slowing down either with 2 new releases at once: the Ghost Armor and the Ex-Aid Armor. Ex-Aid has by far the coolest armor as well as this gimmick still standing strong as one of the better gimmick lines we've seen. Ghost has some added perks as well. Not only is it just as good as the other 2 armor sets but this one comes with some bonus accessories for both Kamen Rider Zi-O and Kamen Ri...
