If you're looking for something new to get into this year, and have a mind for supernatural mayhem with a twist, look no further than The Returners, the new book from up-and-coming author Lee T. Davis. Sporting heavy inspirations from the world of Japanese anime, live-action special effects, high-flying Hong Kong action, and Hollywood sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, this tale of otherworldly antiheroes is not to be missed. As the official blurb states, 2019's The Returners (not to be confused with an older, unrelated release of the same name) gives the spotlight to uncommon protagonists for the action/adventure genre. And that's especially true if we're only counting stories that aren't a prequel, a sequel, a midquel, any-other-kinda-quel, or anything based on an existing property to beg...

How many time puns can one blogger cram into the span of a few weeks? Guess we'll find out, as the pink carpet gets rolled out for the newest hero in the ongoing Kamen Rider super-saga from Toei Company. Kamen Rider Zi-O is time-slipping his way up and down the last twenty seasons of this illustrious franchise, mixing it up with the heroes and villains of Japan's Heisei Era, and god help you if you didn't pack a fire extinguisher. As previously mentioned, Zi-O is the 20th official Heisei Rider series, and they're pulling out all the stops on this nostalgic extravaganza, sure to bring back fond memories (and other stuff maybe) from the show's lengthy history. Naturally, the star of the show is young enough that he was only alive to know some of these guys and basically nothing of the s...

It's that time again. The 20th entry in the Heisei Era's official Kamen Rider television series franchise is quickly approaching, and ahead of it comes a flood of new images and bits of information from which to glean early opinions. And as we feast our eyes on the new Kamen Rider Zi-O, we wonder what the future may hold for this enduring brand. And the future is very much on the minds of the show's creative forces, as the new series lead will be a time traveler, utilizing powers inspired by the heroes who came before him in the Heisei Era, which comes to an end with this incoming project. As the clock imagery in the title logo implies, this is a watch-themed hero, who changes forms based on the timepieces inserted into his henshin belt, accessing various transformations that will ...

20th Century Fox and Robert Rodriguez bring the classic anime and manga title to life in Alita: Battle Angel. The sci-fi tale about an android with killer moves adapts Kishiro Yukito's original Battle Angel Alita, with the use of motion capture CG enhancement for a unique aesthetic in this dystopian actioner. James Cameron (The Terminator, Avatar) was originally set to helm this project as his personal robotic baby, but when other properties called him away, Rodriguez (Planet Terror, Sin City) stepped up to the plate. From a script by Laeta Kalogridis of Shutter Island, the film stars Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, Insurgent), Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds, Spectre), Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Luke Cage), Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen, A Nightmare on Elm Street...

Who doesn't love Comic-Con, huh? The stars are all alight, ready to spread some much-needed shine on (almost) all our favorite geek properties, soon to be set before us in the coming years as we wait with baited breath. One highly-anticipated offering is the newest entry in Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Director Michael Dougherty's creature feature promises more kaiju chaos than you can shake a spiked tail at, as we've invited a few other classic Toho Studios monsters along for this party, all featured in the first trailer. The monsterfest started a little early when a little diddy appeared on the interwebs days earlier. A clip featuring actress Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) looking distraught AF as she tries to find help, after what was no d...

Hold onto your butts, anime fans. Bleach is now a live-action film. The hit original manga series by Kubo Tite first was adapted into an animated tale stretching across 366 episodes before finally signing off. Now, Bleach returns in a new way, with actor Fukushi Sato in the lead role. Fans of his work in the Kamen Rider special effects action franchise may know him best as the title superhero of 2011's Kamen Rider Fourze, where he played a high schooler whose greatest ambition was making friends with every student in his class, which just happened to be ravaged by fantastical monsters. So, not the biggest stretch to find him playing Kurosaki Ichigo, whose town is... ravaged by fantastical monsters. Bleach creator Kubo said of the original comic that it was designed as a title that wou...

Promises, promises. It's all determined salutes and solemn vows on this episode of Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger. And as we settle into this "cops and robbers" series, it hits me just how much the franchise has begun to change its tune. I think we were onto something when we speculated that, in its own way, the Super Sentai brand has been slowly creeping back to the forward-thinking Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters flavor in the last few years. I recently described the 2012 series as being ahead of its time, with its slick style, its character-centric stories, and a seeming intent to move the show into a new era. They just moved at such a fast clip that some diehards felt left in the dust with the whiplash it gave the fan community. And so, after a couple series that...

With the clink of champagne glasses, we begin our newest entry into the long-running Super Sentai franchise. And as the 42nd incarnation of this ongoing saga, Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger has a lot to live up to. After achieving some success by mixing up their well-worn formula with the previous series, chief among my hopes for their latest endeavor was that they'd continue to reevaluate and reinvent their style, which sometimes felt a bit old hat. It's fitting then that we kick off the new story in a casino, as Lupinranger VS Patranger is in a gambling mood this premiere week. Let's zipline into the first action-packed episode and see if it paid off. We open with an exquisitely over-the-top shyster taking money from a desperate man who seems not to notice th...

Ultraman Geed is back. Just a few months after the giant hero series aired its final episode, we return for one last battle with Asakura Riku, the young son of the villainous Belial, as he fights to protect the world he now calls home from the rampage of alien monsters. And here to light a fire under his shiny, silver exterior is none other than Kurenai Gai, the harmonica-playing wanderer best known as the title hero of 2016's Ultraman Orb. Let's do this. https://youtu.be/vioFksgzeY8 Now, as much as I try to get hyped on Geed again, I have to say that it made me laugh a bit to see him quickly reduced to a self-doubting kid again after the events of his own series, apparently leading to Gai stepping in to give him a pep talk about what must be done. Gai is kind of the bigger draw here...
