Not content to pass up the opportunity for a little cross-promotion, Toei Animation is having some fun with two of the big names among its fleet of mega-franchises. Sadly, this crossover is only here as a marketing tool for two separate releases, which have basically nothing to do with each other except they both involve giant things blowing stuff up. We'll take it! Godzilla: Planet Eater is the third and final act in the 3D animated trilogy for the giant lizard in his first fully-animated film saga. Its release this month just happens to coincide with that of Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative, the next installment for the ongoing super robot anime legend. So, Toei Animation is letting their promotional powers combine, and giving them their own commercials and artwork to hype fans of both ...

Greetings and Salutations, HJU readers! It is I, Bookish Delight, here once again to spotlight video games that, as a toku fan, you should totally have on your radar! For undoubtedly at least a few of you reading this, today’s featured series needs no introduction. However, if this holds true for you, then consider yourself part of an elite club, because—especially in Western territories—this series is about as obscure as you can get. Which is both a shame and an oddity, as it took Japan by storm for a decade and a half, and is still going strong even today, with a recently announced comeback title in the works. This series is Sakura Taisen, and even now, years past its heyday, it's kind of a big deal.   Where The Sun Rises https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVI_vkVqy4c

Voltron: Legendary Defender's eighth season will be its last, but before this pleasant surprise of a show takes its final bow, the space-faring Paladins of Voltron have another few months of universe-saving left in them. Here's the trailer. https://youtu.be/X-yHuoOEIHE With Lotor defeated and Shiro recovered, the Paladins are finally able to set a course for Earth. After a long and perilous journey, they discover that their home planet is not how they left it. From Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra fame, Voltron: Legendary Defender premiered on the Netflix streaming service in 2016 and quickly became one of the best new entries into its niche of animated action/adventure. Many will be sad to see it go, but we look forward to its...

Everything old is new again. Toei Company's fondly remembered but not ongoing Metal Heroes superhero franchise continues to sneak into the building through the side entrance while all its other, more currently popular titles in the Super Sentai and Kamen Rider camp stroll through the front. Whether it's Space Sheriff Gavan's new Type-G doing guest spots on every sentai series from here to planet Cayenne or the new Space Squad movie crossover series checking in with just about every long lost hero in Toei's overflowing stable, it's not the worst time to be a fan of these old school monster-fighters. Especially not Special Megabeast Investigator Juspion. In 1985, Kyojuu Tokusou Juspion was born, the fourth in Japan's successful line of Metal Hero shows and the first to place heavy focus...

Promises, promises. It's all determined salutes and solemn vows on this episode of Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger. And as we settle into this "cops and robbers" series, it hits me just how much the franchise has begun to change its tune. I think we were onto something when we speculated that, in its own way, the Super Sentai brand has been slowly creeping back to the forward-thinking Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters flavor in the last few years. I recently described the 2012 series as being ahead of its time, with its slick style, its character-centric stories, and a seeming intent to move the show into a new era. They just moved at such a fast clip that some diehards felt left in the dust with the whiplash it gave the fan community. And so, after a couple series that...

Grab your popcorn and load up on pocky. Mazinger Z: INFINITY is coming to the United States to treat anime fans to a pulse-pounding action/adventure experience best seen in movie theaters. For a limited time only, the latest entry in the Mazinger super robot manga and anime saga can be found on the big screen courtesy of Viz Media and Fathom Events. We talked about the project a couple months back when the trailer dropped, featuring the voice of Kamen Rider W's Kikkawa Kouji, who sings the film's official ending song, "The Last Letter". Now, as the movie finally sees its Japanese debut, the Toei Animation flick makes its way to US shores for a two-day event across the country. https://youtu.be/qZ2OYb1wxZc Viz and Fathom's official synopsis follows: Ten years ago, the villainous sci...

The interwebs can be a dark and tumultuous place, but every once in a while, you can find something to make you smile. Case in point: This little diddy from Youtuber Juan Ignacio Monzon, who provides a marvelous mash-up of two heroes who bear the same name (and a bit more). I'm speaking, of course, of Spider-Man. The classic Marvel Comics superhero brought to life (for, like, the fifth time) in 2017's blockbuster film Spider-Man: Homecoming, starring Tom Holland as the titular high school crimefighter. He comes to us years after another version of the red-and-blue hero swung onto our screens: the 1978 television series Spider-Man (or Supaidaman, if you prefer), starring Todo Shinji as an entirely different alter-ego to the one Marvel readers were used to at the time. Following a landm...

Here's a new promotional video for Pacific Rim: Uprising, the sequel to the original post-apocalyptic monster movie where humanity must fight off extinction with the enormous war machines known as Jaegers. John Boyega of Star Wars: The Last Jedi leads the cast of world-saving pilots, but one actor that was curiously left out of much of the movie's footage shown so far was Rinko Kikuchi, whose integral character had been a welcome presence in the first Pacific Rim and whose absence was sorely felt by this viewer when the sequel began rolling out promo for its 2018 release. Right off the bat, director Steven S. DeKnight (Marvel's Daredevil series), who takes the reigns from creative maestro Guillermo Del Toro (The Shape of Water) for this entry, namechecks some of the godfathers of toku...
