The Ultraman franchise continues flying to new heights this season, as Tsuburaya Productions announces the arrival of the first animated title for the long-running superhero brand since 1980. We recently discussed possibilities for the mysterious countdown leading up to this announcement, courtesy of the eponymous manga series published in the pages of Shogakukan's Monthly Hero magazine, guessing (among other things) that there could be an anime adaptation of the popular comic in our future. And now, we have the first official teaser video to confirm it. Beginning in 1966, the giant monster-fighting Ultraman wowed audiences with its live-action special effects wizardry and imaginative action, giving birth to a lineage that endures to this day, where dozens of new entries into the saga...

International action star Keanu Reeves meets his match when he comes face-to-face with the man, the myth, the legend, Sonny Chiba. While doing press in Japan, the John Wick leading man was asked about one of his personal heroes, and he began to gush about the martial arts legend, only to be shocked by the sudden entrance of Chiba himself. The result is worthy of Reeves' trademark "Whoa". Sonny Chiba became a superstar in his own right, leaping from one action role to another over the course of decades, including the classic ninja film series Shadow Warriors, which inspired filmmaker Quentin Tarantino to cast the actor as his original character's own descendant in the Kill Bill saga. Of special interest to us here at Henshin Justice Unlimited, he also starred in the 1966 Golden Bat ...

I knew I was forgetting something. Here's the trailer for the upcoming Rampage film, based upon the classic 1986 arcade game of the same title, featuring giant monsters whose objective is to survive against military assaults rightfully protecting cities from their wrath and then reduce said cities to smoldering ruin. In the current cinematic climate, where giant monsters are now fairly prominent and viable as "serious" blockbuster fare, how does one adapt what one couldn't be blamed for thinking was a silly take on the kaiju subgenre? Well, you hire a charisma factory like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, of course. Mission accomplished. In this film that reads like a series of sarcastic late night tweets taken more seriously than intended after too much to drink, the former WWE wrestlin...

Those of you looking to get more of that Dynaman goodness from last month are in for a treat. The 1986 classic parody dub of Japan's Kagaku Sentai Dynaman is back with more episodes to stream from original distributors Night Flight. As previously reported, Dynaman, in all its wacky glory, was one of America's first official glimpses into the world of Super Sentai, years before the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers would take households by storm in the 90s. Originally, the niche streaming service Night Flight Plus had only offered three episodes to watch, but now they've doubled that digit for more color-coded explosions to sate your appetite for tokusatsu's early English-language oddities. Whether one chooses to watch them with an earnest appeal, as an anthropological look at the special e...

‘Contra’ Video Game Adaptation: Guns VS Aliens On The Big Screen

In the late 1980s, Contra wore out the television sets of gamers the world over, as commandos Bill and Lance (the Schwarzenegger and Stallone of the video game universe) ripped through a landscape of deadly traps and weapons platforms designed to take them out before they could do the same to the enemy. Now, many years and several reincarnations later, the classic shoot-em-up is finally getting its time to shine (or something) on the big screen with a new film project, as well as a TV series. Like the non-stop actionfest that was the 1987 original, this adaptation is going all out. For better or for worse. Original game developer Konami joins forces with China's Starlight Media to bring the game to life. Many details remain a mystery, though CFI provides this brief synopsis: ...
